How to Enjoy Washington DC Like a Local
GeneralDC is one of the most visited cities in the country, yet many aren’t sure how to blend in here. Thankfully, this city is populated with people from around the world, so it’s okay if you don’t fit in perfectly. Still, if you want to look like a local: here’s how to do it.
Check Out the Museums
There are over eighty different museums in the city, which means there’s a lot to explore and learn. While you’re here, you can check out the large and well-known ones, like the collection of Smithsonian museums, or you can explore the lesser-known museums, like the TSA’s museum of things that have been collected from people getting onto planes.
You’ll have a great time exploring the area and getting to know the history without having to worry about looking like the 1,000th tourist to walk through the White House that day.
Enjoy the Gorgeous Water Views
There’s an incredible amount of water in Washington, DC! This is, in large part, thanks to the rivers and nearby coastline. If you need a break from all of the hustle and bustle of the city, check out one of the many parks that have extensive river and open water views. This will give you a chance to stop, catch your breath, and plan your next move without stopping in the middle of a sidewalk or street.
Keep In Motion
Although you may want to stop to look at addresses when you’re checking out Washington, DC houses for sale: there’s no reason to stop in the middle of any street or sidewalk and bury your face in your phone.
Not only does this mark you a tourist as easily as it would in NYC, but it also leaves you vulnerable to getting pickpocketed or scammed. Most of DC is generally safe, but it’s not safe to leave yourself open in a heavily populated area.
Avoid Tourist Traps
There are tons of landmarks and memorials that are worth checking out, but there are also tourist traps that you could do anywhere and don’t really add much to the experience. For instance, many go on cupcake or muffin tours, and that’s not necessary to enjoy your visit. You can do those anywhere: have fun in DC exploring what makes this city different.
Know How to Save Money
Saving money is a big deal when you’re in DC. This is one of the most expensive areas in the country and incredibly difficult to keep up with if you’re not used to the costs. Instead of buying dinner in expensive areas, or eating out for every single meal, get to know the more affordable ways to get around.
For instance, cooking for yourself for two meals out of the day when you stay in an air BNB can save you a lot of money in the long run. You should also avoid any expensive tours and bus rides since these are often far overpriced.
Washington, DC is Incredible
Whether you’re coming into town from the outer cities or from another state, you’ll fall in love with DC! This incredible city has a taste of everything for anyone, so check it out soon!
